Ashington

Ashington is a town in Northumberland with a population of 28,000 people. It's located 24km north of Newcastle upon Tyne, 3km from the North Sea Coast via the historic coastal village of Newbiggin-by-the Sea. The town is located west of the A189 Northumberland Spine Road, which connects to the UK's major road network.

Ashington lies on the banks of the River Wansbeck, where the charming village of Bothal with its castle from the 14th century and church from the 9th century is located. Sandy Bay and North Seaton Colliery are located near the mouth of the River Wansbeck.

Ashington grew from a small village in the 1840s when the wealthy Duke Portland built housing for people to work at his collieries nearby. The Bothal Mining Shaft, which was dug in 1867, led to the development of five coal mines around Ashington.
